What To Expect In The Meantime

Specs on the 2024 Honda Prologue have yet to be released. Though limited details have been shared with the public in these early stages of the development of this new, fully electrified SUV, Honda promises more information to be made available in the coming months. Plans for a completely electric Acura have also been announced by the company this year, and the car is projected to be released in 2024. This model has yet to be given a specific name (or one hasn’t been announced, at least), but details on this model will be made available in the coming months of 2022, just as promised with the Prologue.

Honda’s Partnership With General Motors

Recently, General Motors and Honda have announced that they have entered into a partnership in which both companies will work together to develop affordably priced electric vehicles marketed to North American consumers. The collaboration is expected to yield positive results for the electric vehicle industry by improving technologies both companies have been working on, like lithium-metal, silicone, and solid-state batteries. Believing in the promise of solid-state battery technology as the “core element of the future of electric vehicles,” Honda continues to pump a great deal of time, effort, and funds into the technology as part of its contribution to the project, while GM continues to develop its more conventional lithium-ion Ultium battery technology.

With General Motors’ Ultium battery technology, Honda vehicles will be equipped with an estimated electric range of 300 or more miles on a full charge with 0-60 mph in as low as 3 seconds (temperature, terrain, battery age, loading, use, and maintenance will affect those figures). The unique battery technology also gives the car the capacity for energy storage from 50 kWh to over 200 kWh and is compatible with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive applications. The companies are also developing and implementing new production methods aimed at improving battery cell manufacturing and accelerating the process of updating those systems.

How Will Honda’s New Initiative Impact The Average Driver?

With the promise of the new partnership with General Motors, Honda seems to be pushing its way into the electric vehicle race, offering competition to brands like Toyota, which has also revealed plans revolving around electrification of its lineup. The history of the Honda Civic is a rich tale that combines all of the classic elements, including a cast of strong characters unified in a common goal to overcome adversity.

The Honda Civic was designed to be perfect in every way, and according to many aficionados, it not only succeeded magnificently at its 1972 debut, but in the decades that have passed since that day. The Civic is one of Honda’s global brands, with hundreds of thousands of Civics being produced and sold each month in both North America and Asia. Automotive experts claim that over 20 million Civics have been sold since the brand’s first vehicle rolled off the assembly line in July 1972.

But how did the Honda Civic come to be? Let’s take a look down memory lane at all of the concepts that came together and challenges that were overcome to create the world’s first Honda Civic.

“Let’s Change The Landscape Of The Automobile Industry.”

When Honda first established itself as an automobile manufacturer in 1963, “Let’s change the landscape of the automobile industry” became their working slogan. We can see this in practice today with Honda’s unique lineup of vehicles that earn top safety scores, lead their segment in fuel economy, and include a full variety of comfort and convenience features that demonstrate the manufacturer’s technological innovation.

The Honda Civic began with a very bold idea: to create a single vehicle that could be successful in urban markets worldwide. As a result, Honda’s development teams knew they would have to create a small enough vehicle to maneuver through crowded streets, powerful enough to accelerate appropriately in traffic, and economical enough to meet the standards set by the US Clean Air Act of 1970.

The Civic was born in Japan as the country soared to the forefront of the global stage. With Japan selected to host international events such as the World Exposition and Olympic Games, it was clear that the country was a major player in the global economy. Therefore, while the Civic was initially considered a potential solution to Japan’s messy transportation industry at the time, Honda considered the Civic to be a global product first and foremost.

“A Car Created For Citizens And Cities”

To design the new Civic concept, Honda divided twenty designers into two teams of ten. One team was composed of experienced designers, while the other included engineers who were newer to the Honda program. The veteran team members were older, with average ages in their late 30s, while the newcomers were in their 20s and early 30s.

Honda encouraged the design teams to create an all-purpose urban vehicle based on their own preferences and requirements. Competition between the teams was encouraged, and later evolved into Honda’s current “free-competition approach through the concurrent implementation of heterogeneous projects.” That means that to get a feel for what different populations wanted most in a vehicle, Honda encouraged teams of contrasting demographics to design the same product separately.

One of the team leaders, Hiroshi Kizawa said of the experience, “We were all weary of the fact that we had made a car that was very good in certain areas but poor in others. We wanted to create a more ordinary car that could provide good quality in all aspects.”

Ultimately, that meant combining plans and design efforts to create a two-box car in which the interior and trunk space were created from one single body section, along with a front-engine and front-wheel drive. Engineers spent ample time experimenting with the percentages of space used for human passengers and trunk area to ensure the right balance of comfort and cargo.

To maximize the interior, increase overall vehicle stability, and reduce the weight of the up-and-coming Civic, engineers decided to include a strut-type four-wheel independent suspension system instead of the rigid rear-suspension favored by Mr. Honda. Though there was some dispute regarding which version would make it into the production vehicle, the advantages of the independent system outweighed Mr. Honda’s reservations about the cost and time required to manufacture this system, and it soon became the standard for all of the manufacturers compact and midsize vehicles.

Clean Air Compliance

Though initially released in its home country of Japan, the Civic immediately gained international notoriety. However, there were a few changes in the American market that needed to be addressed by the Civic’s engineering team before it could become a hit on the U.S. roadways.

First, there was the Clean Air Act of 1970, which provided emissions control regulations for stationary and mobile machinery. Many manufacturers struggled to reduce the emissions output of their vehicles without sacrificing horsepower and overall performance.

At the same time, the oil crisis of 1973 had a disastrous impact on the availability of unleaded gasoline. Vehicles developed with catalytic converters required unleaded gasoline due to potential lead build-up, creating overheating issues.

The Honda Civic’s development team created the Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion, or CVCC engine to meet both of these high stakes demands. Starting in 1974, the Honda Civic was named the most fuel-efficient car by the EPA for four straight years.^[a] By combining a low-emissions engine that could operate on any type of gasoline while being a lightweight, compact vehicle, the Civic was able to become exactly what the design team had sought to create: an economical vehicle that didn’t sacrifice performance or practicality.

Though the Civic’s body style has changed significantly from the 5-square meter trapezoidal version that first hit the streets in 1972, its overall economical approach to driving has not wavered. The 2022 Civic LX gets an EPA-estimated 31 MPG on the city streets and up to 40 MPG on the highway.^[b] Sporting state-of-the-art aerodynamics and a performance-oriented engine, the Honda Civic continues to be an international success fifty years after the first model was released.

The Future Of The Honda Civic

The increased popularity and efficiency of SUVs, including Honda’s own CRV and HRV, have led experts in the automotive industry to question the future of sedans such as the Honda Civic.

However, sales figures released over the past year have indicated the world had a relentless appetite for a vehicle that offers as much for drivers to enjoy as the Honda Civic. Power-Adjustable seating isn’t anything new, far from it, as we’ve been seeing seats with power-adjustable seating since most of us were children. Perhaps you’ve never had power-adjustable seating before and are content with manually shifting your seating position with all sorts of knobs and levers. However, once you experience the ease of a power-adjustable seat, it’s hard to deny that going back to the old-school manually-adjustable seats will be a tough pill to swallow.

Additionally, many vehicles, especially base-level trims that tend to include a power-adjustable seat, only do so for the driver. Since you’ll likely be the one driving the vehicle you’ll be purchasing, it’s worth considering the comfort of your passengers too. Thankfully, shopping in the pre-owned market gives you plenty of opportunities to find a vehicle that matches your budget and extends the benefits of the driver’s comfort to other passengers.

Power-adjustable seating comes in all types of forms. Our personal favorite is the power-adjustable seats with built-in power lumbar support. There’s a high chance you’ve experienced lower back pain or will at some point in your life, and lumbar support has been a crucial component for many drivers––people even buy lumbar pillows for extra support on their car seats. If you do your shopping right, you won’t have to worry about any external accessories and can enjoy the comforts of driving. If it’s your first time driving with a power-adjustable seat, just don’t fall asleep when you get too comfortable.

#2: Heated Seats / Heated Steering Wheel

This one goes hand-in-hand with the power-adjustable seats we mentioned earlier: heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Although here in Midland, our winters are tamer than what you’d find somewhere in New England or Montana, it’s worth having a vehicle that supports heating elements built into your seats. It only takes one day of starting up your vehicle on a cold day to realize, “maybe I should have opted for those heated seats.” Again, in Texas, this isn’t always the biggest of our concerns, but it’s also important to have if you plan on traveling to colder climates. You can opt for a heated steering wheel so you truly never have to worry about uncomfortable mornings on your commute. Even if you aren’t traveling in the cold, a heated steering wheel is still nice if you are a person who always has cold hands.

Heated seats also allow us to bring up another feature––an honorable mention, if you will. If you’re putting time and effort into deciding which type of seat you want––like a power-adjustable heated seat––you may as well consider what material you want your seats to be made up of. For example, cloth seats are regularly the standard unless you’re purchasing a more premium-oriented vehicle. Cloth seats are considered basic, but if you spend more, you can often upgrade to leatherette, synthetic leather, or genuine leather. You are going to want to warm up leather on colder days anyways because sitting on cold leather is an experience many of us have had and one that we prefer to avoid at all costs.

#3: Rearview Camera

We’ll put it bluntly: if a vehicle doesn’t have a rearview camera, look elsewhere. Rearview cameras were once considered high-tech, but then again, so were CD players. Sure, if a vehicle you’re buying doesn’t have a CD player, it may not be a deal breaker in the age of digital media through our phones and other music players, but would you still spend so much money on a vehicle that omits a feature universally recognized as standard? No, you likely wouldn’t. To be fair, any vehicle built from 2018 onward will have a rearview camera as required by law, but if you are looking at used models before then, you need to make sure you get one.

Any driving instructor would tell their students not to get used to the rearview camera so they can learn the old ways of reversing by looking over their shoulders, and that’s still the preferred method. The camera provides extra information about your surroundings you should take into consideration, like how close you are to an object behind you. Often, manufacturers add a few extra features to the rearview camera, such as a parking assist that displays the trajectory of your vehicle’s reverse path in real-time.

#4: An Infotainment Center

The rearview camera seamlessly brings us to our next item on this list: an infotainment center. It doesn’t matter what size the screen is, if your vehicle doesn’t have an infotainment center, find one that has it. Sure, if you’re upgrading from an older vehicle, you may have never experienced an infotainment center, but there’s no doubt it plays a significant role in how we perceive our vehicles as crucial tools in our lives and is the modern-day standard. Everything is a computer if you think about it, and infotainment centers blend the versatility of an internet-connected device with the functions you associate with your radio––like audio controls.

Having an infotainment center also opens the door to other modern features we’ve become accustomed to. For example, many modern-day infotainment centers include features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto––sometimes the wireless variety. Infotainment centers often include USB ports for charging your phone or as an AUX input, but your vehicle may also include a Wireless Charging Pad to wirelessly charge your phone––something most flagship devices support in the year 2023.

#5: Safety Features

Again, this is something you are going to find as a pretty standard offering in most recent vehicles, but older models may or may not have a suite of safety and driver assist features. Many manufacturers take part in such a concept, like Honda Sensing, Ford CoPilot360, Chevy Safety Assist, and many more. These suites will have many similar features, but what comes standard does vary from brand to brand and model to model. Features you can expect to find in modern-day safety suites include forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, parking assist, blind-zone monitoring, and much more (though names for these features will vary). In the year 2023, you may as well invest in your future and ensure you have a vehicle that takes the necessary steps to prevent accidents or lessen the damage when they occur.

We Could Keep Going

Picking a list of five features we couldn’t live without wasn’t easy, and we could easily keep going. The most helpful part about the modern-day automotive industry is that everyone has different tastes, but manufacturers are more equipped than ever to accommodate even the most specific of drivers.
