Some vehicles, like the Honda Civic, are beloved. However, just because a vehicle like the Civic is beloved doesn't mean they're all built equal. For example, the 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback can be purchased in a hatchback configuration, which isn't anything new for the Civic, but it doesn't change the fact that a host of Civic drivers may be one to opt for the hatchback model instead of the traditional sedan-shaped one, and vice versa. This means that two Civic drivers can drive the same type of vehicle, but the way they achieve their results is unique from one another.

With the 2024 Civic hatchback, there's no reason to second guess yourself because what you're getting is a performant, sizable, efficient, and high-tech hatchback that continues Honda's long-running Civic namesake and provides you with an experience that culminates everything the manufacturer has learned to date about providing drivers with an experience that's both practical, safe, and above all else, fun to drive.

Performance

The Standard 2.0L I-4 Engine

The 2024 Honda Civic hatchback comes with three possible powertrain options. The standard powertrain is a 2.0L I-4 engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT.) This engine can also be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission if you are the type of driver who prefers manually shifting your gears. This 2.0L I-4 engine has 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque, and this powertrain comes with FWD. Both the manual transmission and the CVT provide efficient results, but there's an undeniable edge for models that utilize the CVT.

Driving the 2024 Civic Hatchback with the 2.0L I-4 engine will earn you EPA-estimated ratings of 30 MPG in the city and 38 MPG on the highway, followed by 33 MPG combined, if you stick with the CVT.[b] If you swap your Civic's transmission out for the manual transmission, this Honda hatchback will earn you fuel ratings of 26 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined.[b] Keeping your Civic's starting price as low as possible will net you this powertrain, and it's a great place to start for cost-conscious drivers.

The Turbocharged 1.5L I-4 Engine

The next powertrain that may come with your 2024 Civic Hatchback is a turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine. Like the prior powertrain, the transmission linked with this engine is either a CVT or a 6-speed manual transmission, based on your choosing. The performance sees an uplift over the base powertrain, with the turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine outputting 180 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, which means switching over one powertrain tier increases horsepower and torque output by 14% and 28%, respectively.

Fuel efficiency is even greater with this powertrain over the base one. What this means is that in addition to the performance as mentioned earlier enhancements, you're also getting fuel economy ratings of 31 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway, with 35 MPG combined if you have the CVT and 28 MPG in the city, 37 MPG on the highway, and 31 MPG combined with the manual transmission.[b]

The Type-R's Turbocharged 2.0L I-4 Engine

The Civic Hatchback may look contemporary and relish in its practicality, but if you buy the Type-R trim, the Civic Hatchback can be a performant beast, too. Performance may surprise you with the Civic Type-R because it's a far cry from the other two powertrains. With the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine that comes with the Type-R trim, the Civic Hatchback outputs 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and is the only one of the trio that doesn't have support for the CVT.

Fuel efficiency is overall lower with the Civic Hatchback Type R. However, considering you're getting a performance boost that sees a 99% increase in horsepower and a 125% uptick in torque output over the base powertrain, fuel economy ratings are genuinely respectful. The turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine achieves 26 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined, meaning you can get the best of both worlds.[b]

Features

Seating Enhancements

The 2024 Honda Civic is equipped with a host of features that range from the most practical amenities to the more premium ones. For example, the base Civic hatchback comes with manually adjustable seats, but if you move up to a trim like the EX-L, you'll get an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat instead. The top-end trim – the Sport Touring – goes one step further and replaces the manual passenger seat with a 4-way power-adjustable chair.

Available Interior Features

Lower-tier trims wrap the Civic Hatchback's seats in cloth, but a material swap over to leather is available on trims like the EX-L and Sport Touring. A leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel also come with these trims – the Sport and Sport Touring also include dual-mode paddle shifters behind the wheel if you buy a Civic with the CVT – but they also appear on the Sport, which is above the base model. The EX-L and Sport Touring trims also include other features for your chairs, including turning them into heated seats. With these two trims, you'll also get a one-touch power moonroof, so letting in that cool summer breeze and radiant sunlight is a tap away.

Audio and Infotainment

Multi-media tech features range from practical to premium. Starting with the speakers, the base trim comes with four speakers that run off a 160-watt sound system. The Sport and EX-L both have an upgraded audio solution over the base model, with both trims doubling the among of included features from four to eight, and the power output is increased by 40W up to 180W total. The Sport Touring trim does things differently and provides what is, without a doubt, a far more lavish audio experience thanks to a partnership with Bose, which not only adds an exclusive bass driver with the included subwoofer but there are another four speakers to the mix, bringing the total to a whopping dozen speakers.

No matter which 2024 Civic Hatchback you buy, an infotainment center is baked into the experience, whether that's the seven or nine-inch screen, and you'll also get features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For most trims, accessing Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is done with a USB cable, but Sport Touring trim owners are treated to the wireless variants of these software suites. Not to mention, the Sport Touring also comes with more exclusive features like a wireless phone charging pad, SiriusXM and HD Radio compatibility, Honda's in-house navigation suite, and much more.

The Honda Sensing Suite

The 2024 Civic Hatchback also comes with the Honda Sensing suite built in, meaning you don't have to spend any extra money to not only protect your multi-thousand dollar investment but also protect yourself, your passengers, and everyone else around you. Some features don't come standard with every trim, with features like a Blind Spot Information System (BSI) and a Rear Cross Traffic Monitor (CTM) coming standard with the Sport Touring – the BSI also comes standard with the EX-L.

However, every 2024 Civic Hatchback trim comes with a Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS,) Forward Collision Warning (FCW,) Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS,) among others. No matter which trims you buy, you'll also get helpful passive features like the Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR) and Auto High-Beam Headlights, although the latter can be disabled by the end-user if they prefer. TSR will help you stay informed about current speed limits and other signs you may have potentially missed when passing them.

Interior Measurements

Cargo and Passenger Volume

The 2024 Civic Hatchback has the distinction of having a hatchback, which means you'll not only get more cargo space, but unlike the sedan variant, you can fold down the back seats. However, no matter what, the 2024 Civic Hatchback will always have at least 24.5 cu.ft. of space for cargo, which is a great upgrade over any regular sedan. In addition to this cargo space, the 2024 Civic Hatchback also has a maximum passenger volume of 99 cu.ft. of space, and how this translates into real-world usage is this vehicle provides a healthy amount of head and legroom for up to five people, including yourself. Hip and shoulder room measurements are excellent with the 2024 Civic Hatchback, which are equally important when discussing interior dimensions.

Front Row Measurements

Starting with the front-row measurements, you and the person beside you will have 39.3 inches of headroom followed by a lengthy 42.3 inches of legroom. The total amount of shoulder room measures out at a wide 57 inches for front-row occupants, and the hip room provides similar results with 54.3 inches. If you're a taller or wider driver, the Civic Hatchback can accommodate you and provide you with an enjoyable experience. The same goes for passengers, too, as the Civic Hatchback proves to be an excellent and comfortable vehicle to ride in for adults, teens, and children alike, even if seated in the back.

Back Row Measurements

How does the back row of the 2024 Civic Hatchback fare regarding real-world measurements? The 2024 Civic Hatchback's rear row holds up very well, with head and shoulder room especially being highlights. With the 2024 Civic Hatchback, backseat passengers get 37.1 inches of headroom, 37.4 inches of legroom, 56 inches of shoulder room, only 1 inch less than the front row, and 48.9 inches of hip room. Whether you're driving the kids to school, the friends to the coffee shop, or you're making money on the side by utilizing your vehicle, the 2024 Civic Hatchback is spacious enough for all of the above.
