If you were driving in the mid-1990s, you’ve heard of, or perhaps even have driven, a Honda CR-V. If you're unfamiliar with the vehicle, you might be interested to learn what the 2024 Honda CR-V can offer you. The Honda CR-V is Honda’s multi-award-winning compact SUV that first debuted in the mid-1990s. With millions of cars sold and a seemingly endless amount of creativity and innovation from within Honda’s R&D departments, does the 2024 Honda CR-V deserve your money or even your attention? The answer to both questions is a resounding "yes," and this starts with the SUV you’ll be driving. The 2024 Honda CR-V retains its predecessors' capable and efficient ways, as seen by the returning turbocharged powertrain.

The 2024 Honda CR-V is available with a starting price of $29,500.[a] Not including the hybrid models, the 2024 CR-V has three trim levels. This means two things. Firstly, three trim levels mean it takes little time to narrow down which trim is right for you as there’s less to research, but rest assured, the CR-V has an impressive spread of standard features you should be excited to try. The LX is the base trim, and the two following trims are the EX and EX-L, the latter of which took over the spot of the high-end option once the Touring name was retired for the regular CR-V after the 2022 model.

Starting MSRP: $29,500 [a]

Efficiency

Something the CR-V is well-known for is fuel efficiency. The 2024 model is no exception, but why is that? The CR-V utilizes the turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine that has come standard with the CR-V for a handful of years, paired with the fluid continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Turbocharged engines are the unsung hero of modern-day SUVs because you can expect impressive fuel efficiency while keeping that gasoline-powered engine that many people prefer over hybrids.

However, fuel efficiency is a combination of factors, not just one. Aside from the powertrain you’re using, the turbocharged engine in the 2024 CR-V and the drivetrain can affect ratings, but it’ll all be for nothing without a cavernous fuel tank. The CR-V has a fuel tank that measures 14 gallons deep, which means you should get around 420 miles on a full fuel tank with the turbocharged engine’s fuel economy ratings.

Fuel Economy

If your 2024 CR-V has FWD, your turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine will earn your Honda SUV EPA-estimated ratings of 28 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway, with 30 MPG combined. The 2024 CR-V with all-wheel drive gives this turbocharged engine ratings of 27 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined. The FWD model should only lose 3.3 gallons of fuel after traveling 100 miles; the AWD model loses 3.4 gallons. The choice between FWD and AWD shouldn’t be decided through fuel efficiency. Those who need AWD will know they do, and they’ll buy their SUV with this criteria in mind.

Performance and Capability

The fuel economy ratings are the best example of the effect of owning a turbocharged engine. What’s so great about the 2024 CR-V is the sufficient amount of performance your SUV will have thanks to the turbocharged engine. Having the turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine paired with the CVT means you aren’t only getting those unreal fuel economy ratings, but you’re also getting a notable 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. Towing trailers up to 1,500 lbs is also possible with the turbocharged gasoline engine, so even if it’s once every other year, it’s great to have the option.

Interior

No matter how stylish the exterior of your vehicle is, it doesn’t tell you anything about how it feels to drive it or how comfortable it is to sit inside. The CR-V’s interior is spacious, overflowing with features, and has enough in the way of comfort to make long-winded travel feel quick, effortless, and even perhaps relaxing. Like other dual-row SUVs like other compacts, the 2024 Honda CR-V hosts five people. The driver’s seat is comfortable on the base trim, but if you want something with extra comfort and extravagance, then opt for either of the two following trims because the manually-adjustable driver’s seat from the LX is replaced with a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 2-way power-lumbar support.

Other Available Seating Enhancements

For the price of the CR-V EX and EX-L, many drivers may have settled with an 8-way or even 6-way power-adjustable seat, but the CR-V is a perfect example of how much Honda cares about value; more specifically, passing this value onto its beloved customers. The EX and EX-L also have heated seats in the front row, but the EX-L is the only one of the three trims with two-position memory for its power-adjustable seating, perfect for if your CR-V will be shared between you and a family member.

The EX-L also replaces the manually-adjustable chair for the front-seat passenger with a 4-way power-adjustable seat, which is a great option if the front seat in your car may be regularly occupied by a spouse, partner, parent, child, sibling, etc. Lastly, the CR-V EX-L’s seats are made of leather, not cloth like the EX and LX, for that last touch of flair.

Cargo and Passenger Space

The CR-V is aptly sized within its housing. All three trims don’t deviate in size and offer identical dimensions with one exception: the LX has a passenger volume of 106 cu.ft., while the EX and EX-L have 103.5 cu.ft. Otherwise, all three trims offer a maximum of 76.5 cu.ft. of space when the backseats are folded down, which still keeps a ridiculously impressive 39.3 cu.ft. of space when these seats are kept in place.

This kind of passenger volume and cargo space proves how adequate this compact SUV is for families of four, with the occasional fifth passenger, but there’s more good news too. In the front row of the 2024 CR-V, you get 40 inches of headroom, 41.3 inches of legroom, 57.9 inches of shoulder room, and 55.6 inches of hip room, which is fantastic all around. The rear row is similarly excellent, with 38.2, 41, 55.9, and 52.6 inches of head, lead, shoulder, and hip room, respectively.

Features

The features you’ll get with the 2024 Honda CR-V have everything you need for not only the average day but for the occasional long trips too. The highlights include features that always have you covered and the ones you use every time you drive, whether you realize it or not. Features you don’t realize are present until you need them include the standard Honda Sensing suite.

Honda Sensing

Honda Sensing is a safety suite that comes standard on every 2024 CR-V, and its features are mostly passive, so you won’t be actively seeking out your vehicle’s Collision Mitigation Braking System as it’s a feature reserved to prevent accidents during emergencies that can prevent either a vehicle or pedestrian from being struck by your car.

Honda Sensing has features to prevent front-end collisions, but other passive features also protect you from side-swiping other vehicles or even reversing into them if you buy a CR-V with the Cross Traffic Monitor, which is included in the EX and EX-L. Features that help keep the sides of your vehicle safe, including your blind spot, include the Lane Keeping Assist System and Lane Departure Warning to promote safe and focused freeway travel, and the Blind Spot Information System, which is only available on the EX and EX-L.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All three CR-V trim levels have similar technology, but not every trim is equal. All three trims have a 7-inch Digital Instrument Cluster Screen and HondaLink, but the EX-L veers away from the other two trims in a few ways. The LX and EX both have 7-inch infotainment centers with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built-in, but the premium EX-L trim has a 9-inch infotainment center with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a physical volume knob serving both as tactile feedback and a stylized addition to the already premium-feeling interior of the CR-V.

The EX and EX-L share the same amount of USB-C charging ports for front and back-row passengers; you’ll find zero in the LX. Which speaker setup you get depends on which trim you buy, too, with the LX getting a quad-speaker setup with 160W of power, the EX getting a 240W speaker system with six speakers, and the EX-L gets the eight-speaker arrangement that runs on twice the amount of power as the LX’s speaker system: 320-Watts. The EX-L also has HD Radio and SiriusXM integration and a Wireless Charging Pad for your cell phone.
